The repeatable shift loop
Stabilize the store
Stock shelves, clean messes, serve the till and handle fuel or employer tasks. Store performance matters because personal income supports the pet storyline and the best ending.
Screen the customer
Question them, inspect the ID, compare visible features and cross-check the NET terminal. The official store description confirms these are the core investigation systems.
Resolve the call
Do not use appearance alone. A clear record or identity conflict is stronger than awkward behavior. Finish the verification before the transaction is completed.
Prepare for a hunt
If a creature gets through, barricade doors, place traps and choose a hiding or fighting plan. Preserve a path between the sales floor, exits and defensive supplies.
First-run priorities
| Priority | Why it matters | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Accurate customer checks | Prevents extra hunt pressure and protects income. | Trusting a familiar name without re-checking. |
| Personal money | Needed for medicine and the $250 Night 13 surgery route. | Spending without tracking the ending threshold. |
| Trap access | Some threats and achievement routes need a specific trap response. | Entering a hunt without a bear trap available. |
| Clear co-op roles | Keeps the register, checks and store work from colliding. | Everyone abandoning the counter at once. |
Phase-by-phase operating plan
| Phase | Primary objective | Failure to prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Before the notice board | Orient the team, review supplies and agree on customer-check calls. | Starting the shift before everyone knows the plan. |
| Normal service | Stock, clean, serve, investigate and keep the counter moving. | Letting station work rush an incomplete identity check. |
| Suspicious customer | Compare at least two independent evidence channels. | Shooting on behavior alone or serving despite a hard record conflict. |
| Hunt | Use barricades and traps to protect a route, then fight or hide as the threat requires. | Blocking the only retreat or splitting the team without a callout. |
| Shift close | Review personal pay, store upgrades, pet costs and ending progress. | Confusing store revenue with the personal surgery fund. |
Solo and co-op adjustments
Solo
Reduce task switching
Finish one customer check before returning to shelves or cleaning. Stage defensive supplies on a route you can reach without crossing the entire store.
Co-op
Give one player the final call
Assign a verifier, floor lead and defense lead. Teammates can gather evidence, but one spoken decision avoids a rushed or duplicated response.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How many shifts are in Story Mode?
The official Steam page lists 13 randomly generated Story Mode shifts.
What should a beginner prioritize?
Accurate customer checks first, then steady store service, a reachable defense route and a clear record of personal money.
Do I need a database for every customer?
Use the in-game NET computer for the current visitor. An external name list cannot replace it because shifts are randomized.
